Preah Khan fu costruito sul luogo della vittoria di Jayavarman VII sugli invasori Ch?m nel 1181. Secondo Coedès il nome moderno, che significa "Spada Sacra", è derivato in modo insolito dal significato del termine originario Nagara Jayasri ("Città Santa della Vittoria"), città reale provvisoria dopo l'assunzione del titolo di Re dei Khmer da parte di Jayavarman VII. La parte centrale del complesso comprende numerosi strutture delimitate da una serie di corridoi e portici finemente decorati con basso-rilievi e sculture in ottimo stato di conservazione.
