Specie: Chelonia mydas

In Oman, nel tratto di costa che affaccia sul golfo omonimo, a pochi chilometri da Sur si trova il Ras Al Jinz Scientific Centre: questo centro si occupa dello studio e della protezione delle tartarughe verdi (Chelonia mydas) che vanno a deporre le uova in quell'area; nei periodi di maggiore afflusso, che vanno da Agosto a Novembre, raggiungono la spiaggia fino a 200 tartarughe per notte. Il centro, dove è possibile soggiornare in camere nuove e ben arredate, organizza le escursioni per vedere le tartarughe. Sia gli ospiti del centro che i visitatori "non residenti" vengono accompagnati alla spiaggia (raggiungibile in circa 15 minuti di cammino) dalle guide del centro per vedere le varie fasi di costruzione del nido e la deposizione delle uova. Le visite si svolgono sempre col buio, una verso le 22 ed un'altra alle 4 del mattino. Anche se le tartarughe depongono solo la notte, l'escursione del mattino è da preferire in quanto si prolunga sino all'alba e da la possibilità, a chi lo desidera, di fermarsi sulla spiaggia anche quando la maggior parte dei visitatori rientra, cosa che noi abbiamo fatto e che ci ha permesso di vedere un paio di tartarughini correre verso il mare!
