Lo scatto ritrae Yepun, il quarto dei telescopi principali del Very Large Telescope (VLT) situato a Cerro Paranal, nel deserto di Atacama (Cile). Il potente raggio laser visibile al centro serve a creare una stella artificiale nell'alta atmosfera, indispensabile per i sistemi di ottica adattiva, che correggono le distorsioni causate dall'aria terrestre e permettono di ottenere immagini nitidissime del cosmo. Yepun, nella lingua Mapuche che era parlata dall'antico popolo nativo del Cile e dell'Argentina, significa “Venere” la Stella della Sera. Un nome poetico per uno strumento che ogni notte apre una finestra sull'Universo.
