A prima vista sembra un pezzetto d'alga. Ma se guardi bene… ha occhi, pinne e si muove a scatti. È un cavalluccio marino (Hippocampus reidi), una delle specie più affascinanti che si possono incontrare nelle acque tropicali. L'ho fotografato a Urca, in Brasile, mentre si mimetizzava perfettamente tra le alghe. Come molti cavallucci, è un maestro del camuffamento: resta immobile, si ancora con la coda e si confonde con l'ambiente. Ma ciò che lo rende davvero unico è un fatto curioso: è il maschio a partorire i piccoli, dopo averli custoditi in una sacca ventrale. Creature fragili, spesso minacciate dalla pesca e dalla distruzione degli habitat. Osservarli nel loro ambiente è un privilegio — e un promemoria di quanto sia urgente proteggere la biodiversità marina.
