Stavanger, chiamata “Città del Petrolio“, è una cittadina costiera norvegese di grande attrattiva. Qui ha sede la Statoil, la più grande compagnia petrolifera della Norvegia che ha fatto la fortuna della città. Il boom petrolifero di Stavanger iniziato con le estrazioni degli anni Settanta, infatti, ha favorito lo sviluppo urbano, rendendo la città molto ricca. Pur essendo una città moderna e nonostante il suo carattere industriale, Stavanger è una cittadina molto graziosa. Il centro storico, inoltre, custodisce gli edifici in legno più belli e meglio conservati della Norvegia. La città vecchia di Stavanger è un quartiere residenziale molto lontano dalle moderne architetture che dominano gran parte dello skyline della città. A rendere lo scenario ancora più affascinante sono le stradine acciottolate, illuminate da lampade a gas, che si insinuano tra file di case rivestite di legno e intonacate a calce. Sul molo occidentale, inoltre, possono essere ammirati alcuni edifici, tra negozi e magazzini in legno, risalenti all'Ottocento, dal 1810 al 1870 per la precisione, anni in cui Stavanger crebbe molto grazie al commercio delle sardine.
