I bufali d'acqua selvatici sono attivi sia nelle ore diurne che in quelle notturne. Sono pascolatori generalisti, nutrendosi principalmente di graminoidi quando disponibili, ma si nutrono anche di altre erbe, frutti e cortecce, oltre a brucare dagli alberi e arbusti. Si nutrono anche di colture, tra cui riso, canna da zucchero e iuta, causando talvolta notevoli danni alle coltivazioni.
