Siamo nel grande deserto del Kalahari. L'orice namibiano, noto anche come orice gazzella, è un'antilope africana di grossa taglia che vive principalmente nel deserto del Namib in Namibia. Ha un'altezza al garrese tra 115 e 125 cm e una lunghezza da 180 a 195 cm. Le femmine pesano tra 180 e 225 kg. È un animale gregario che vive in branchi spesso composti da alcune decine di individui, con una struttura sociale gerarchica dove un maschio dominante si accoppia con tutte le femmine fertili. La sua dieta è prevalentemente erbivora, con preferenza per erbe, ma può nutrirsi anche di tuberi e radici in condizioni difficili. L'orice è adattato a vivere in condizioni molto aride grazie a un particolare sistema di raffreddamento cerebrale che lo protegge quando la temperatura corporea raggiunge i 45 gradi, temperatura che è letale per la maggior parte dei mammiferi. Questa caratteristica gli permette di sopravvivere nel deserto con pochissima acqua, recuperando l'umidità anche dai frutti selvatici come i meloni. Questa spettacolare creatura è un simbolo di adattamento e resistenza nell'ambiente estremo del Namib ed è uno dei simboli della Namibia. Più sotto altre 2 pose più ravvicinate.
