L'airone cinerino (Ardea cinerea) è un uccello trampoliere caratterizzato da lunghe zampe e collo flessuoso. Raggiunge anche il metro di altezza e un peso che da 1 a 2 kg ed un'apertura alare di 175-195 cm. Gli adulti hanno piume nere sul collo e un ciuffo scuro sulla nuca molto visibile; nei più giovani il piumaggio tende al grigiastro. Zampe e becco sono giallo intenso, l'airone è dotato di dita lunghe e distanziate tra di loro che gli consentono di muoversi su terreni fangosi e per la lunghezza delle sue zampe fa parte del gruppo degli uccelli trampolieri.
