Uno spettacolare e iconico uccello presente solo nelle foreste nebulose dell'Ecuador nordoccidentale e della Colombia occidentale. La gola grigia, il petto e il ventre rossi, una corona nerastra, dorso e fianchi arancioni opachi, pettorina rossa e ali e coda blu-nere scure e il robusto becco giallo con la punta nera ne fanno uno degli uccelli più eleganti del Sud America. Non si trova nulla di simile nel suo areale. Di solito si trova in coppia nella volta della foresta, spesso in stormi misti. Si nutre di grandi insetti e di frutta.
