Piccoli coralli (almeno al momento nel mio acquario in natura posso raggiungere dimensioni ragguardevoli) appartengono agli Ottocoralli, ovvero una sottoclasse degli antozoi, caratterizzati dalla presenza di 8 tentacoli pinnati su ciascun polipo. Senza andare troppo nello specifico bisogna citare che appartengono entrambi all' ordine degli Alcionacei ovvero coralli molli poiché non producono esoscheletri di carbonato di calcio, a differenza dei cosiddetti coralli duri o madrepore, appartenenti invece alle sclerattinie.
