Per manovrare un pupo palermitano servono movimenti precisi ed energici. Un pupo in genere è alto 75 cm e pesa intorno a 15 kg tra legno, stoffe, alpacca e rame ?. Per questo i pupari usano un appoggio che sostiene il braccio: senza, sarebbe impossibile reggere uno spettacolo di un'ora! Ogni rotazione trasmette vita al pupo: la testa, il busto, le spalle, le gambe… tutto è collegato e il pupo prende movimento ad ogni gesto ?. Solo i più esperti riescono a farlo con naturalezza. Ruotando il ferro la testa gira così da spingere la spalla e il fianco opposti a venire in avanti. Da qui i movimenti si trasmettono alle gambe permettendo al pupo di muoversi nella scena.
