ll Ponte Emilio, oggi conosciuto anche come Ponte Rotto, risale probabilmente alla metà del III secolo a.C., secondo i testi di Tito Livio e Plutarco, o le monete dell'epoca. È il ponte in pietra più antico di Roma. l Ponte Emilio si trova un po' più a nord del primo ponte di Roma, il Ponte Sublicius, scomparso, che collegava direttamente il Foro Boario al Trastevere e alla Via Aurelia. In origine, i sette piloni in pietra sorreggevano una passerella in legno larga 8 metri. Fu ricostruito tra il 179 e il 142 a.C., con volte in muratura per sostituire la passerella. Dopo numerose piene, gli archi furono ricostruiti nel 1552. Ma un'altra piena fece crollare due archi nel 1557. Furono ricostruiti, ma metà del ponte fu distrutta dalla grande piena del 1598. Da allora, rimase solo la parte occidentale. Nel XIX secolo, un ponte sospeso completava il ponte. Infine, durante la costruzione del ponte Palatino, i due archi che davano sulla riva destra furono distrutti. Rimase solo un arco, con i piloni dell'epoca romana.
