Questo insetto appartiene alla famiglia delle Cicadidi, inserita nell'ordine dei Rhyncota. Caratterizzato dalla presenza di una testa grande, possiede due ali dalla consistenza membranosa. Altra caratteristica distintiva di questi insetti è la vista eccellente che possiedono. Gli esemplari maschi, inoltre, sono dotati di un particolare organo con membrane vibranti in grado di produrre il tipico frinire che ci accompagna durante le giornate più calde. Le cicale si nutrono della linfa presente sulle piante. Per nutrirsi infila il rostro, una sorta di protuberanza, nella corteccia e succhia la linfa. Per questa ragione sono noti tra gli insetti come “trapanatori di piante”, poiché sottraggono liquidi alle piante provocando potenziali danni alle coltivazioni. Il ciclo vitale di questi esemplari come insetti si esaurisce alla fine della stagione estiva e dura pertanto solo pochi mesi. Con il sopraggiungere dell'autunno, infatti, dopo aver deposto le uova gli adulti muoiono. Una volta schiuse, le larve sprofondano nel terreno dove possono sopravvivere fino a 4 anni al massimo. Raggiunto lo stadio adulto, escono in superficie e vivono la loro stagione riproduttiva durante l'estate.
