La Amphicar è un veicolo anfibio cabriolet per trasporto persone costruito in Germania dal 1961 al 1968. È l'unica automobile anfibia per usi civili a essere stata prodotta in massa. Altri veicoli anfibi son stati costruiti, nella storia, ma tutti a scopi militari. La Amphicar, invece, poteva essere acquistata, immatricolata da chiunque e condotta su strada con una velocità massima di 120 km/h ed in acqua con una velocità di 12 km/h, circa 6 – 8 nodi. Prestazioni modeste nell'uno e nell'altro caso, ma non fu questo a decretarne un modesto esito commerciale, ma soprattutto il prezzo, doppio, circa, rispetto ad un “Maggiolino” Volkswagen. Ne furono prodotti 3.878 esemplari e di questi, 3046, furono esportati negli U.S.A Qui conobbe un discreto successo e fu maggiormente compresa: un'auto che costava, ma che lasciava sognare: l'idea di giungere su di una spiaggia e proseguire in mare, senza porti, scivoli, permessi, ma in totale autonomia, in piena libertà, tra lo stupore di tutti gli astanti ed il divertimento del conducente possedeva e possiede, anche oggi, grande fascino Un esemplare fu acquistato dall'allora Presidente degli Stati Uniti: Lyndon B. Johnson che amava terrorizzare i suoi ospiti, lanciandosi verso il laghetto privato nella sua tenuta, urlando: “i freni non rispondono!!” Giunti in acqua, gli ospiti vedevano quella strana vettura galleggiare e, a scampato pericolo, lui amava prenderli in giro per il terrore provocato Nel settembre 1965 due esemplari furono impiegati per la traversata della Manica: da Dover a Calais Nel mese di agosto dello stesso anno la rivista italiana “Quattroruote” con un esemplare compì la traversata da Piombino all'Isola d'Elba. Quest'anno la stessa impresa è stata riproposta da due mezzi perfettamente restaurati di due appassionati. L'esemplare in foto l'ho ritratto su di una “péniche”: casa galleggiante, sulla Senna a Parigi.
