Il Kintsugi è una filosofia orientale che significa letteralmente “riparare con l'oro”. È un'antica pratica e tecnica giapponese che consiste nel riparare oggetti in ceramica, utilizzando l'oro per saldare insieme i frammenti. Per gli occidentali la rottura, le difficoltà e le cicatrici spesso hanno un significato negativo, legato al dolore, alla vergogna, al senso di colpa e al fallimento. Facciamo fatica a considerare che i momenti di crisi e di dolore possano costituire nuove risorse e offrire nuove opportunità di cambiamento. In Occidente quando si rompe un oggetto per ripararlo usiamo la colla trasparente, in modo da nascondere le linee di rottura. Quante volte abbiamo detto: “Se il vaso è rotto, è rotto! Non potrà più essere come prima!”. Per i giapponesi, invece, ogni storia, anche se dolorosa, è fonte di bellezza e ogni cicatrice viene mostrata orgogliosamente. Secondo la tecnica del Kintsugi, da una ferita è possibile ridare vita a ciò che è stato danneggiato, creando una nuova forma da cui nasce una storia ancora più preziosa, sia esteticamente che interiormente. Ogni pezzo riparato diventa unico grazie alla casualità con cui la ceramica può rompersi e per le irregolari decorazioni che si formano con il metallo. Le crepe che prima erano punti fragili da nascondere vengono valorizzate con l'oro. Il Kintsugi non è solo una tecnica di restauro, ma ha un forte valore simbolico. Rappresenta la metafora delle fratture, delle crisi e dei cambiamenti che l'individuo può trovarsi ad affrontare durante la vita. L'idea alla base è che dall'imperfezione e da una ferita possa nascere una forma ancora maggiore di perfezione estetica e interiore. La particolarità di questa pratica risiede nel fatto che il vaso non viene riparato nascondendo le crepe, ma anzi queste vengono sottolineate attraverso l'oro. Attraverso la valorizzazione della frattura, il vaso rotto ora ha una nuova storia.
