La femmina sia nella fase chiara che nella fase scura si riconosce oltre che per le maggiori dimensioni rispetto al maschio, anche per la cera grigio blu e l anello perioculare giallo smorto tendente al grigio blu.
Nel maschio la cera e l anello perioculare sono giallo brillante, il piumaggio più brillante soprattutto nel petto, ed i calzoni sono di un rosso più marcato.
Più raramente si osservano anche esemplari giovani col petto e la parte inferiore alare screziati.
Nei piccoli nati non è possibile determinare il sesso morfologicamente ma solo mediante analisi del DNA
