Il profilo di Castelsardo è una delle cartoline più note della costa sarda, magnifico e inconfondibile, con il paese medievale fortificato e protetto dal castello in cima a un promontorio. Facile capire perché fosse un borgo praticamente imprendibile per i nemici. Castelsardo conserva orgogliosamente il suo centro medievale, il Casteddu, un dedalo di vicoli e piazzette rimasto intatto fin dal Medioevo e tuttora dominato dai resti del suo castello, a volte chiamato “Castello bellavista” per i panorami che regala ai visitatori. Oggi l'antica fortezza ospita il MIM-Museo dell'Intreccio Mediterraneo, dedicato alla tradizione locale dell'intreccio di cesti e stuoie, ma nella visita sono compresi anche gli splendidi camminamenti delle sentinelle che solcano le scogliere sotto la fortezza. La rocca di Castelsardo, situata in posizione strategica, nel corso dei secoli passò di mano in mano dai genovesi agli aragonesi e spagnoli, dagli austriaci ai Savoia, che le diedero il nome attuale. Risale al periodo spagnolo la cattedrale di S. Antonio Abate, che stupisce con il suo campanile colorato riconoscibile anche da miglia di distanza in mare. All'interno si conserva il preziosissimo retablo del Maestro di Castelsardo, anteriore al 1492. Da vedere è anche la chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie, legata ai riti della Settimana Santa, molto sentiti in paese: qui si può vedere il Cristo nero, un crocifisso tra i più antichi della Sardegna, portato in processione nella famosa celebrazione del Lunissanti, il lunedì che precede la Pasqua. Intorno a Castelsardo sorgono diversi siti preistorici, tra cui il nuraghe Ispighia e il nuraghe Paddaggiu, ma anche formazioni rocciose uniche al mondo come la cosiddetta Roccia dell'Elefante, scolpita dagli agenti atmosferici e punteggiata di domus de janas.
