La Basilica Cisterna è uno dei monumenti più visitati di Istanbul. È stata costruita dall'imperatore Costantino nel IV secolo e fu poi ampliata dall'imperatore Giustiniano nel 532.Scoperta per caso sul finire del XIX secolo la cisterna è stata sottoposta a ristrutturazione nel 1985 ed è stata aperta al pubblico solo nel settembre del 1987.Lunga 143 metri e larga 70 metri, la Cisterna forniva acqua per il palazzo imperiale con un serbatoio di 80.000 metri cubi. Era alimentata dall'acquedotto di Valente che convogliava le acque dalle colline circostanti, si trattava di uno degli acquedotti più lunghi costruiti nel tardo periodo romano, utilizzato addirittura fino agli anni '50 e ben visibile ancora oggi nei pressi di Aksaray per la lunghezza di 900 metri. Il serbatoio della Cisterna oggi si presenta come un enorme spazio sotterraneo in cui trovano spazio 336 colonne alte 9 metri e distanziate l'una dall'altra di 4,90 m. I capitelli sono un misto tra gli stili Ionico e Corinzio, con alcune eccezioni rappresentate da colonne Doriche o addirittura di colonne non decorate. I muri perimetrali sono di mattoni ed hanno uno spessore di 4 metri. La malta utilizzata nella costruzione è speciale ed impermeabile. Buona parte dei materiali e delle colonne sono elementi di riuso, ne sono testimonianza in particolare due enormi teste di Medusa provenienti probabilmente da un arco monumentale del foro di Costantino, che fanno da base (rovesciate) a due delle colonne di sostegno della volta.
