Quel giorno ripassavo per l'ennesima volta da Desertes diretto al colletto. Il buon Neto vedendo che mi fermavo a prendere acqua alla fontana, mi si avvicinò sorridente: “Dov'é che vai di novo con lo zaino a spalle? E con sto caldo poi!” “Buondì Neto; salgo al colletto per vedere di fotografare le coturne…” “Oh me car! Ma per le coturne adesso è tardi.” “Come tardi? Le sento cantare tutte le volte a ridosso della pietraia; adesso credo che le femmine siano in cova ma i maschi si fanno ben sentire!” “Intendo dire tardi come orario. Vedi, quando ero giovane, e si andava a caccia un po' tutto l'anno, col favore della notte salivo sovente, assieme a Lidio, alla vecchia postazione di pietra realizzata dai cacciatori, per aspettare i camosci sotto al colletto. Durante quelle lunghe attese necessarie ad osservare i movimenti dei camosci, avevamo capito che le coturne, alle prime luci dell'alba, scendevano dalla pietraia verso la sorgente di Clo Moutun per abbeverarsi e poi risalivano. Le sentivamo sfrecciare nel volo di discesa e poi le osservavamo risalire leste, di pedina, tra i massi e i ginepri nani. Non cantavano ma facevano un verso sordo come un soffio soffocato e mi passavano vicine...” Per un istante mi parve che gli occhi di Neto si bagnassero, ma poi lui mi incalzò entusiasta: “ Sai dovè quella postazione vero?” Io annuii e Neto, certo della sua esperienza, mi incoraggiò a riprovare un'altra volta ma partendo a notte fonda… Ed eccoci qui: con gli occhi ancora pieni dell'emozione di poter riprendere una coturna, così vicina, nel suo aspro ambiente roccioso, e il cuore appesantito da una punta di tristezza al pensiero che le infinite esperienze e conoscenze di tanti nostri vecchi debbano un giorno andarsene con loro.
