pdr difficile salendo lungo la mulattiera che conduce a Genestredo. In quel periodo si poteva visitare il castello soltanto il sabato e la domenica. Il Castello di Vogogna, situato a nord del borgo e addossato a uno sperone di roccia, fa parte di un complesso e ben antico sistema difensivo del medievale borgo di Vogogna, nato come strumento di difesa e vedetta sull'intera Val d'Ossola. Il sistema fortificato di Vogogna è costituito in primis dalla Rocca, probabilmente risalente al XI sec. situata a 350 metri d'altitudine sul Monte Orsetto, in posizione ancora più dominante rispetto alla valle. Sempre datata al XI sec è la torre poligonale del Castello, posizionata contro montagna, con la funzione di difendere la sopraelevata Rocca. Nella seconda metà del XIV sec, Giovanni Visconti, vescovo di Novara e Signore di Milano ampliò il Castello nell'ambito di un più sostenuto piano di rafforzamento della rete difensiva del Ducato di Milano, di cui all'epoca Vogogna ne faceva parte. Sfruttando la posizione altamente strategica del Castello, che controllava a nord gli accessi ai passi alpini e a sud il collegamento con Milano e la pianura, il Visconti ordinò la costruzione di un corpo di fabbrica rettangolare addossato alla torre preesistente, con l'aggiunta di un'altra torre semicircolare verso il borgo e la vallata. Per proteggere ancora di più il suo insediamento fece costruire una cinta muraria rafforzata qua e là da torrette di cui restano solo pochi ruderi, che, cingendo il borgo, lo proteggeva da attacchi nemici e rendeva più efficace il controllo dei commerci. Anche la struttura del castello venne dotata di un recinto, a pianta quadrilatera e rinforzato ad ovest dove si apriva un portale con bugnato di marmo di Crevola a sesto acuto e munito di ponte levatoio.
