La specie ha mostrato un forte declino in buona parte dell'areale europeo nella seconda metà del Novecento e un moderato declino in Europa nel periodo 1970-1990, mentre la popolazione generale del continente è rimasta stabile o ha subito un leggero declino nel 1990-2000. La popolazione italiana appare in calo nell'ultimo ventennio; a livello di areale si nota una generale rarefazione della specie, in alcuni casi conclusasi con l'estinzione locale.
In particolare, viene registrato un forte declino della popolazione nidificante in Lombardia, con una diminuzione media annua del 10,2% tra il 1992 ed il 2007; la popolazione del 2007 corrisponde circa al 50% di quella del 1992. Sulla base delle preferenze ambientali della specie, precedentemente esposte, appare chiaro come l'intensificazione agricola, con la rimozione di aree marginali quali siepi e cespugli e il pesante utilizzo di insetticidi e fertilizzanti, costituiscano una forte minaccia per la specie. D'altro canto, l'abbandono delle zone rurali che attualmente interessa ampie porzioni di aree collinari e montane in tutta Europa rappresenta un'altra grave minaccia per la conservazione della specie.
