Viterbo Quartiere Medievale. Un mestiere, una volta molto diffuso nelle campagne, era quello del cestaio che fabbricava cesti di varie forme e dimensioni con i vimini a mano. Molti erano anche i contadini capaci di fabbricare cesti o rivestimenti di damigiane e lo facevano soprattutto durante la stagione invernale, quando rallentava il lavoro dei campi. Questi cesti erano una volta indispensabili per la raccolta di uva e frutta in genere, di ortaggi, uova ecc., per cui la richiesta era abbondante. Tutta la lavorazione avveniva a mano senza bisogno di particolari attrezzi e richiedeva solo tempo, pazienza e un po' di precisione. Innanzitutto il cestaio doveva preparare il materiale, cioè i rametti di salice e andare a raccoglierli lungo il fiume a primavera. Doveva togliere ai rametti la corteccia, lasciandoli di colore chiaro come il vimine e tenendoli immersi nell'acqua per renderli più flessibili. Nella fabbricazione del cesto si partiva facendo il fondo, poi le pareti e infine il manico, la parte più delicata del lavoro. L'importante era realizzare cesti solidi e duraturi. Il cestaio si recava anche presso le abitazioni dei contadini per svolgere la sua attività. Oggi i cesti sono per lo più di plastica e vengono importati da paesi dove ancora si lavora a mano il giunco, il vimine ecc.
