Il cannareccione si riproduce in Europa e nella parte occidentale dell'Asia temperata. Non si riproduce in Gran Bretagna, di cui peraltro è un regolare visitatore. L'area di svernamento prediletta è costituita dai territori dell'Africa subsahariana. Il contingente italiano raggiunge le maggiori densità nella Pianura padana, soprattutto quella orientale. In porzioni minori è presente anche nelle regioni tirreniche e adriatiche centro-settentrionali. Nelle regioni insulari e meridionali e nei comprensori appenninico e alpino la presenza della specie si riduce ulteriormente.
