La Catena di Markarian, una straordinaria fila di galassie nell'Ammasso della Vergine, nasconde un segreto. Situato tra i 50 e i 60 milioni di anni luce di distanza, si trova il nucleo dell'Ammasso della Vergine, noto anche come Gruppo della Vergine I, l'ammasso di galassie più vicino a noi. M84 e M86 sono due grandi galassie ellittiche che formano un'estremità di una lunga catena di galassie a spirale e di galassie ellittiche più piccole. Molte di queste galassie sono già in fase di fusione, un esempio ne sono NGC 4438 e NGC 4435, le galassie "Occhi", una a spirale e l'altra lenticolare.
