Non molto attraente ma preziosissimo per l'equilibrio dell'ambiente, vero e proprio “netturbino” della savana, l' hooded vulture, capovaccaio pileato, è l'avvoltoio africano che ha più rapporti con l'uomo. È possibile infatti vederlo, in gruppi numerosi, anche nelle vicinanze dei centri abitati, e in particolare di mercati, mattatoi e in ogni altro luogo dove abbondano i rifiuti. E' una specie ad alto rischio di estinzione, con una perdita di circa il 50 per cento negli ultimi decenni. A minacciarne l'esistenza, così come quella di altri avvoltoi, sono la riduzione dell'habitat, la cattura per ricavarne farmaci tradizionali e carne, la persecuzione diretta e l'avvelenamento di molti animali dei cui resti si cibano.
