La Leggenda di Kerlingarfjöll Si racconta che, molto tempo fa, tra i monti fumanti e le sorgenti bollenti di Kerlingarfjöll, vivesse una gigantesca strega di pietra chiamata Kerling, il cui nome significava proprio “vecchia”. Era una creatura antichissima, forgiata dal fuoco della terra e dal ghiaccio eterno. Kerling vegliava sui monti e sulle acque termali, proteggendo i viandanti dalle tempeste e dai troll del nord. Ma un giorno, sfidò gli dei, pretendendo di fermare il sole nel cielo d'estate, così da prolungare l'eterna luce. Gli dei, offesi dalla sua arroganza, la trasformarono in roccia. Ancora oggi, si dice che la sua sagoma pietrificata si intraveda tra le creste rossastre delle montagne. I fumi che salgono dalle sorgenti non sono altro che il suo respiro, che riscalda la terra e ricorda al viaggiatore di rispettare la potenza della natura islandese. E se nelle notti d'estate senti un sussurro tra i geyser, forse è la voce di Kerling, che ancora veglia sul suo regno di fuoco e ghiaccio.
