Mi ha sempre impressionato l'abilità di mio padre negli innesti. Da piccolo vivevo come una magia questa capacità di rigenerare una vita da una pianta che spesso appariva morta ma che allo stesso tempo nascondeva il respiro di nuova vita nei polloni che di forza penetrano la corteccia e ergendosi dritti alla ricerca della luce. Nei limoni comparivano lateralmente fuscelli verticali di melangolo dai frutti arancio saturo e amari, riconoscibili anche dalle spine puntute e dalle foglie con un piccolo lobo nettamente separato nella parte bassa. Negli ulivi il portainnesto spesso è l'olivastro dalle foglie piccole e dal colore verde denso. Tra le operazioni da fare nei campi è la più delicata e necessita di manodopera altamente specializzata, come nel caso della potatura. Il taglio deve essere netto e preciso, sia nel tronco da rivitalizzare che nella piccola marza. Entrambe le facce dei due legni devono essere scolpiti con grande abilità e precisione affinché possano combaciare alla perfezione, altrimenti il fallimento rischia di ritardare più anni un nuovo tentativo. In questa foto ho immortalato il momento, quando, dopo alcune settimane dall'innesto, si procede all'apertura dell'involucro di carta e plastica e si libera definitivamente la nuova pianta germogliata. L'attenzione è massima nei gesti perché anche urto debole potrebbe spezzare la nuova vita. Servono gesti precisi e sicuri per coprire con mastice le ferite ancora visibili e facile passaggio per agenti patogeni. In questo momento il germoglio appare debole e dal colore ancora pallido, ma se l'operazione è fatta nei tempi e modi giusti basteranno pochi giorni perché la nuova varietà prenda vigore dalle forti radici che la sostengono rigenerando una pianta che presto darà nuovi frutti. Nella foto un innesto di ulivo delle pregiate varietà cerasuolo, Carolea o nocellara del Belice tipiche della Sicilia occidentale, viene ricoperto da mastice protettivo in località Cefalà, tra Bagheria e Casteldaccia.
