La Philaneus spumarius, semplicemente e comunemente conosciuta come Sputacchina, sono una famiglia cosmopolita di insetti dell'ordine dei Rincoti Omotteri. La loro presenza è ben visibile a primavera, sulle nostre piante ornamentali, soprattutto quelle erbacee, per la presenza di una schiuma bianca appiccicosa, simile ad un sputo.Gli adulti sono piccole farfalline dal colore, tra il bruno chiaro ed il nerastro, lunghi circa 5 mm. Le femmine depongono circa 400 uova nella corteccia degli alberi, durante il periodo estivo. Le uova passano l'inverno per poi schiudersi a primavera, liberando le larve che migrano nelle piante erbacce vicino. Le larve si nutrono di linfa, rilasciano e si ricoprono di un liquido schiumoso, che non è altro che lo scarto del loro intestino, utile per proteggersi dagli attacchi dei predatori.
