Tra gli anni Venti e Trenta del Novecento, i lavori per l'isolamento del Campidoglio, liberato da tutte le strutture successive all'epoca romana, e gli sventramenti nella zona tra il Teatro di Marcello e la Bocca della Verità per l'apertura della Via del Mare (oggi via del Teatro di Marcello e via Petroselli) stravolsero il tessuto edilizio di questa parte della città. Nelle demolizioni scomparve anche la piccola e pittoresca piazza Montanara, dove un tempo sostavano gli scrivani pubblici e si radunavano i contadini provenienti dalla campagna. A essere risparmiato fu solo uno degli edifici medievali che sorgevano sulla piazza, poi chiamato “casina dei Pierleoni” con riferimento alla nobile famiglia romana che nell'XI secolo aveva residenza nell'area tra la chiesa di San Nicola in Carcere e il Tevere. Insieme con l'annessa torre, l'edificio venne anche ristrutturato, utilizzando elementi architettonici (come le finestre) appartenuti a edifici adiacenti che vennero invece demoliti. Più che alla precisa volontà di conservare un frammento di storia medievale, il motivo della sua conservazione va ricondotto probabilmente alla necessità di dare una opportuna sistemazione urbanistica della nuova Via del Mare. L'edificio poteva contribuire a ricucire il bordo dell'area sventrata e la torre, insieme al campanile di San Nicola in Carcere, rappresentava uno dei monumentali “segnacoli iniziali” della nuova via. La casina ha conservato in parte le strutture antiche sul lato nord e sul lato verso il colle (molto rimaneggiato con presenza di alcune aperture originarie e altre riproposte in stile) ed è stato completato da nuove facciate in corrispondenza di via del Teatro di Marcello e del vico Jugario. Nel 1954, sulla facciata della torre fu infine posta una bella immagine di “Maria Immacolata”.
