La foto è tecnicamente molto imperfetta, avendola scattata in questi giorni, a un fermo immagine di un breve filmato che ho registrato con una telecamera Sony nel 1995 in Zaire (oggi Repubblica Democratica del Congo). Ho girato il film nel Parco Nazionale di Kahuzi-Biega, area naturale protetta nella parte orientale della Repubblica Democratica del Congo, 50 km a ovest di Bukavu nella provincia del Kivu Sud, vicino alla sponda occidentale del Lago Kivu e al confine ruandese. Fondato nel 1970 dal fotografo e naturalista belga Adrien Deschryver, prende il nome dai due vulcani estinti presenti nell'area del parco: il Kahuzi (3 308 mt. s.l.m.) ed il Biéga (2 790 mt. s.l.m.). Il parco è uno degli ultimi rifugi del gorilla, una specie iscritta nella lista rossa IUCN (Unione Internazionale per la Conservazione della Natura). Dal 1980 il parco è incluso tra i patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO. Durante la mia visita in Congo, nel 1995, ho vissuto l'emozione di incontrare i Gorilla e allo stesso tempo il raccapriccio di aver evidenziato in un'immagine, la bestialità di cui sono capaci taluni esseri umani: la gorilla è stata privata della mano destra. La Guida raccontava di feroci gesta dei bracconieri e dei loro crimini, comprese le amputazioni degli arti per venderli come souvenir, ma mai mi sarei aspettato di vedere con i miei occhi il risultato dei loro misfatti. Non ho potuto frenare le lacrime.
