Vivono in gruppi sociali di 5–25 individui; la loro è una società matriarcale con gerarchie complesse e come molte altre scimmie si dedicano a toelettature sociali, essenziali per il mantenimento delle relazioni.È una delle specie più espressive tra i primati, grazie alla pelle nuda del viso e ai muscoli facciali molto mobili. Sono diurni e terrestri, ma passano molto tempo anche sugli alberi.
