Il complesso di cui fanno parte le nebulose IC434, B33 e NGC2024 si trova nella costellazione di Orione, in prossimità prospettica della brillante stella Alnitak nella Cintura di Orione, a circa 1500 anni luce da noi. La posizione equatoriale del complesso ne consente l'osservazione da tutte le aree abitate della Terra. Studi approfonditi, condotti con diverse metodologie, hanno determinato che la temperatura della regione si aggira intorno ai 6000 K. NGC2024, nota anche come nebulosa fiamma, è una nebulosa a emissione. Fu scoperta da William Herschel nel 1786, ha una dimensione di 24 anni luce e la fonte della sua luminosità potrebbe essere un giovane ammasso composto da circa 300 stelle, situato nella parte meridionale della nube. IC434 è una nebulosa a emissione rossa, originata dall'idrogeno ionizzato della vicina stella luminosa Sigma Orionis; grazie alla sua presenza è possibile osservare la famosa Nebulosa Testa di Cavallo, nota anche come Barnard 33, una nube oscura che la contrasta sulla nostra linea di vista. La prima foto in assoluto del complesso risale al 1888, scattata presso l'Osservatorio dell'Harvard College.
