La sfinge testa di morto, Acherontia atropos è una grossa falena appartenente alla famiglia Sphingidae, ben nota per un disegno dorsale sul torace che fa pensare ad un teschio. A causa di questo disegno e soprattutto della stupidità umana, la nostra povera sfinge, anche se del tutto innocua nei nostri confronti, si è guadagnata una reputazione negativa, ha ispirato collegamenti con la morte e con le forze del male, ed è stata considerata messaggera di disgrazie e malattie e portatrice di sfortuna. Questa sua del tutto immeritata notorietà ha fatto sì che venisse citata e rappresentata in racconti, romanzi, dipinti, film, fin da epoche remote.
