Galleria degli Uffizi L'opera propone una sofisticata allegoria umanistica, trasponendo in immagine - pur con qualche libertà - la descrizione letteraria del leggendario quadro di Apelle delineata nel De Calumnia di Luciano e poi riproposta da Leon Battista Alberti nel De Pictura (1435). Il dipinto del pittore classico era stato esguito dopo che Antifili, suo rivale, lo aveva ingiustamente accusato di tradimento presso il suo mecenate, il Re d'Egitto Tolomeo IV Filopatore. Entro un fastoso spazio architettonico, fittamente ornato di esempi di virtù pagane e di santità cristiana, la composizione di Botticelli rappresenta il Re Mida, simbolo del cattivo giudice, stretto tra l'Ignoranza e il Sospetto; il Re tende la mano al Livore; la Perfidia e la Frode acconciano i capelli alla Calunnia, che trascina a terra il calunniato. La vecchia coperta da un manto nero sulla sinistra è la Penitenza, che guarda la Verità, nuda e con lo sguardo rivolto al cielo.
