inizio con questo scatto curioso preso al volo, un ombrello aperto in un giorno di sole al chiuso di una galleria: Staglieno, Settore B - il Porticato semicircolare (per i comuni mortali). Il Settore corrisponde a un primo ingrandimento del cimitero rispetto al nucleo originario, costituito dal quadrilatero, rivelatosi presto insufficiente rispetto alle esigenze di una città in forte crescita. Il progetto di ampliamento fu affidato ancora all'architetto Giovanni Battista Resasco, che nel 1868 propose un porticato semicircolare a nord-est, addossato a un lato corto della struttura più antica: analoga costruzione avrebbe dovuto corrispondervi simmetricamente sul lato opposto. Il progetto trovò applicazione parziale solo nei primi anni Novanta dell'Ottocento con la realizzazione, a Levante, del Porticato Semicircolare (dietro al quale è una seconda galleria di colombari) e della Galleria Trasversale, aree monumentali, ricche di opere d'arte, ove domina un linguaggio lontano dai modi del realismo borghese, altrove diffuso. Con l'affermarsi del simbolismo, figure femminili più o meno velate, tra fluidi e sinuosi andamenti lineari liberty e raffinate stilizzazioni déco, esprimono infatti una concezione della morte in cui prevalgono sensualità e mistero. Nuove funzioni avrebbero indotto a creare strutture come il Tempio Crematorio, in prossimità del centro del Porticato Semicircolare.
