Un piccolo gioiello nascosto all'angolo tra via di Villa Giulia e via Flaminia, nel quartiere Pinciano, la fontana fu realizzata nel 1552 dall'architetto toscano Bartolomeo Ammannati su commissione di papa Giulio III (Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte) durante la costruzione di Villa Giulia, splendida residenza fuori porta del pontefice. La fontana appare oggi perfettamente integrata alla struttura dell'edificio – Palazzo Borromeo, proprietà dello Stato Italiano e sede dell'Ambasciata d'Italia presso la Santa Sede – a differenza delle sue origini, in cui, monumentale e solitaria, celava un incantevole ninfeo della Villa Giulia, tra giochi d'acqua e peschiere. Una vasca in pietra di forma rettangolare raccoglie l'acqua che scorre dalle bocche di un mascherone alato, sovrastato dallo stemma dei Colonna con trofeo di armi e bandiere, e di due animali marini, posti ai lati.
