Sa Jara Manna Gesturi Genoni Tuili Setzu Genesi e storia della Sa Jara Manna Con ogni probabilità il termine “giara” deriva dal latino “glarea”, ovvero ghiaia, parola che sta ad indicare la pietrosità del suolo. Essa si è formata circa due milioni di anni fa grazie alle colate laviche eruttate sopra un basamento arenarico da due crateri oggi spenti, ma ancora ben visibili: Zepparedda (la vetta dell'altopiano, alta 609 metri) e Zeppara Manna (il punto più panoramico , alta 580 metri ). Le due eruzioni, avvenute con una distanza temporale di 700 anni l'una dall'altra, hanno ricoperto la valle esistente formando una grande pianura basaltica. Nel corso dei secoli, proprio perchè naturalmente una fortezza inespugnabile caratterizzata da pareti a scarpata simili a bastioni, la Giara è stata a lungo una difesa importante contro gli invasori. Le tracce disseminate nell'altopiano testimoniano di un passato remotissimo. Sulla sommità si contano 24 nuraghi, per lo più monotorre. Inoltre, la Giara è attraversata dal tratto di strada romana selciata più lungo della Sardegna: ben sette km. Non a caso già nel Medioevo i pastori frequentavano l'altopiano, attraversando le impervie mulattiere dette “scalas”. Le pinnetas, rifugi simili a capanne nuragiche, erano le loro case. Sempre a livello naturalistico, sono spettacolari i cosiddetti is paulis, depressioni dove ristagna l'acqua piovana: in primavera questi stagni si ricoprono di un manto bianco di ranuncoli, in estate si prosciugano e appaiono come distese “lunari”. In autunno le piogge li colorano del rosso cupo delle tamerici, mentre in inverno sono rivestiti di un sottile strato di ghiacchio. Celebri sono i cavallini della Giara, assolutamente un caso unico in Europa di colonia equina selvaggia. Galoppano tra i cespugli in piccoli gruppi, si abbeverano nei pauli e si nutrono prevalentemente di ranuncoli. Oggi sono circa 700 gli esemplari che pascolano nella Giara allo stato brado. Oltre ai famosi cavallini, la fauna dell'altopiano è completata da cinghiali, donnole, lepri, martore, volpi e 60 specie di uccelli.
