Il palazzo è un'opera del Michelozzo realizzata a metà del 1400, fu commissionata da Cosimo il Vecchio, e vi abitarono i Medici. Nel 1659 il palazzo fu ceduto alla famiglia Riccardi che lo ingrandì e vi abitò per circa 150 anni. Dopo varie vicissitudini è divenuto sede della Prefettura e del Consiglio metropolitano.
