La Fontana delle Palle di Cannone, situata in Via di Porta Castello, appena oltre i fornici aperti nel Passetto, è situata sotto un arco in travertino a tutto sesto, al centro del quale è raffigurato lo stemma del Comune di Roma, ed è costituita da un mascherone posto al centro di una piramide costituita da palle di pietra sovrapposte, chiaro riferimento alla vicina fortezza di Castel Sant Angelo, che versa l'acqua nella sottostante vaschetta-abbeveratoio per cavalli. La Fontana delle Palle di Cannone, dedicata al Rione Borgo, fu realizzata da Pietro Lombardi nel 1927, come le altre fontane tutte allusive, nelle decorazioni, agli stemmi dei rioni o alle attività dei luoghi, come la Fontana delle Anfore, la Fontana degli Artisti, la Fontana delle Tiare, la Fontana dei Libri, la Fontana della Pigna, la Fontana dei Monti, la Fontana della Botte e la Fontana del Timone.
