Nel 509, durante un'epidemia di peste, papa Gregorio I ebbe in visione dell'arcangelo Michele nell'atto di rinfoderare la propria spada sulla sommità del castello a significare la fine dell'epidemia che affliggeva Roma. Fu questo avvenimento a determinare il nome che attualmente ha Castel Sant'Angelo.
