Il monte Joanaz, un piccolo altopiano al confine tra Italia e Slovenia, circa 100 anni fa è stato teatro di sanguinose battaglie. In seguito alla disfatta di Caporetto l'esercito, fino ad all'ora guidato dal generale Cadorna, velocemente indietreggiò cercando di sfuggire all'Impero Austroungarico e all'avanzata della Germania del Kaiser Guglielmo. Inferiori numericamente e non supportati da una adeguata difesa militare, gli Italiani, trovarono nel Monte Joanaz uno strategico punto per impegnare col fuoco l'esercito nemico. Ben presto però si resero conto che i loro sforzi non sarebbero serviti a nulla e se fossero rimasti lì, sarebbero certamente morti o peggio ancora fatti prigionieri. Un fante improvvisatosi mitragliere da questo valico per 36 ore col suo eroismo contestò il passo ed impedì l'avanzata ad una intera Divisione nemica, finché sopraffatto dal numero, venne travolto e trucidato in questa cappelletta.
