Sul fianco destro del Vittoriano, due scale spettacolari salgono all'antico monte Capitolino: circa duecento anni separano le due opere ma il contrasto tra l'essenzialità dell'una e l'armonia dell'altra rivela il mutamento irreversibile nello spirito dei tempi. Mentre la Cordonata progettata da Michelangelo nell'ambito dei lavori di sistemazione del Campidoglio, per la venuta a Roma di Carlo V, è uno dei simboli della Roma rinascimentale, la ripida scalinata che l'affianca ci trasporta nel pieno Medioevo. 124 gradini di marmo antichissimo di spoglio, ricavati forse da ciò che rimaneva del Tempio di Serapide al Quirinale, conducono sulla sommità settentrionale del colle capitolino, la cosiddetta Arx, dove già dal VI secolo sorgeva probabilmente la chiesa, con annesso monastero, che dal XIV secolo sarà conosciuta con il nome di Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Per collegare la chiesa alla città e superare il grande dislivello con la strada sottostante, viene costruita una nuova imponente scalinata: realizzata da Lorenzo di Simone Andreozzi a spese del popolo romano come ringraziamento alla Vergine per aver salvato la città dalla peste, e sarebbe stata inaugurata, secondo la leggenda, dal tribuno Cola di Rienzo. Nel Seicento, sui gradini della scalinata erano soliti accamparsi durante la notte i contadini che venivano in città a vendere i loro prodotti. L'abitudine fu interrotta piuttosto bruscamente dal principe Caffarelli, che abitava a poca distanza. Mal tollerando plebaglia e schiamazzi, una sera fece rotolare sulle scale delle botti piene di pietre, travolgendo le persone addormentate e provocando morti e feriti. Per evitare altri incidenti, la scalinata fu quindi chiusa con grandi cancelli, rimasti in loco fino alla fine dell'Ottocento. La scalinata è stata considerata anche una vera e propria “scala santa” da percorrere in ginocchio per ricevere la grazia desiderata. Il suo potere si sarebbe esteso anche al Lotto: la tradizione voleva che, per ottenere i numeri vincenti, fosse sufficiente salirla in ginocchio di notte, recitando Avemarie e De profundis e raccomandandosi ai re magi.
