E' stato interessante osservare l'abilità del chiurlo maggiore nel sondare in profondità il fango con il suo lungo becco e nel procacciarsi per cibo tanti giovani grillotalpa (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa). E' schizzinoso e preferisce lavare bene la preda in acqua prima di ingurgitarla.
