Qui, il 31 agosto 1302, fu concluso fra Carlo di Valois e Federico II d'Aragona il trattato di pace che pose fine alla sanguinosa guerra dei Vespri siciliani "Pace di Caltabellotta". Prima di acquisire il nome arabo di «Kal'at Ballut» (rocca delle querce) era chiamata «Triocala», che significa «tre cose belle».
