Il suo cantiere navale nel cuore della Versilia porta i segni di una storia lunga più di un secolo e densa di progetti realizzati attraverso la conoscenza e l'abilità, sempre più rare, di costruire e riparare imbarcazioni di legno. Ha l'aria furba e scanzonata di chi ha visto molto nella vita e imparato l'arte di relazionarsi con le persone di ogni carattere e censo che il mare ha condotto innanzi alla sua porta. Si arrotola una sigaretta dietro l'altra mentre ci scambiamo qualche battuta sui massimi sistemi della vita. Il suo passato è segnato da l ricordo di quel Brasile dove i genitori emigrarono e lo fecero nascere e di cui oggi resta una moglie che parla anche il portoghese e una vecchia targa d'auto appesa alla porta. Non ama prendersi troppo sul serio, eppure mi accorgo di quanto sia preparato nel suo mestiere e di come sia capace, con poco, di risolvere problemi apparentemente complessi. Il tempo trascorso con Massimo è stato ricco di senso e conoscenze, ma leggero come quelle nuvolette di fumo che, spesso, vedevo avvolgere il suo viso.
