The saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus) is a member of the "big four" snakes that are reponsible for causing most envenomations and deaths in India. Saw-scaled vipers are often reported to be "extremely aggressive". However all the individuals I have observed in Africa (same genus, different species) and in India behaved not differently from other vipers (like most snakes, vipers are not "aggressive" and try to avoid confrontation with humans). These snakes are responsible for many human envenomations because they can be extremely abundant in suitable habitats that are also frequented by locals and field workers who walk barefoot. Echis carinatus has a strong venom that causes hemorrhage and coagulation defects, resulting in serious complications (hemolysis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, hypovolemic shock, acute kidney injury). Several drugs have been obtained from the venom, including echistatin, which is used as an anticoagulant.
