Plaza Mayor si trova in pieno centro della città ed è impossibile non finirci per caso. Qui si passeggia e si ammira le case colorate, attraversare gli archi e perfino pranzare in una delle sue numerose terrazze. Inizialmente chiamata piazza del mercato settimanale, concessa dai re Ferdinando il Cattolico e Carlo I, che la resero il più grande centro di attività commerciale di Burgos. In essa si apriva la Puerta de las Carretas, attraverso la quale i carri entravano nei mercati che rifornivano la città e intorno ad essa si distribuivano i banchi di vendita, sotto i portici che circondano la piazza. Nel XVIII secolo, nel 1784, iniziarono i lavori di costruzione del nuovo Municipio e furono demolite la Porta Carretas e il muro di cinta annesso, dando il via alla costruzione di nuovi edifici allineati attorno alla piazza con facciate porticate.

L'Arco di Santa Maria è una delle dodici porte medievali che la città aveva durante il medioevo.

Era la porta più signorile tra tutte quelle che davano accesso alla città di Burgos risalente al XIV secolo. Nel secolo XVI venne ristrutturata da Juan de Vallejo e da Francisco de Colonia.
