Il castello di Poppi è il monumento principale del Casentino. Al contrario di tutti gli altri castelli ed architetture medievali della zona non è stato rovinato dal tempo e dagli uomini essendo sempre stato usato come residenza del potere politico o amministrativo locale, infatti ancora oggi vi ha sede il Comune di Poppi. Fin dalle sue origini la storia del castello è strettamente legata a quella della più grande famiglia feudale del Casentino che mise Poppi al centro delle sue grandi proprietà ed abitò questo maniero per quasi quattrocento anni, i conti Guidi. Nonostante le prime notizie scritte dell'esistenza del castello siano datate 1191, la sua architettura e il fatto che i Guidi erano già all'epoca titolari di vasti possedimenti in Toscana e Romagna si presume che la sua fondazione sia stata antecedente di due o tre secoli, risalente al periodo fra le invasioni Longobarde e Franche in questi territori.
