Nymphalis polychloros (Linné, 1758) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Nymphalinae - Apertura alare: Da 5 a 6,5 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutte le regioni, isole comprese. Habitat : Radure di boschi chiari e cespuglieti, dal livello del mare sino a 1900 m. - Periodo di volo: Bivoltina con sfarfallamenti in giugno per la prima generazione e da agosto per la seconda. In alcune località può avere una sola generazione. In entrambi i casi gli adulti svernano allo stadio adulto rimanendo in vita sino a maggio dell'anno successivo, per cui è possibile osservare esemplari in volo anche in pieno inverno nelle giornate miti. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie essenze vegetali tra cui salice, olmo e pruno. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina indistinguibile dal maschio, ma a volte più grande. - Specie simili: Aglais urticae, da cui si distingue in particolare per le dimensioni maggiori. Inoltre in N. polychloros la colorazione del rovescio delle due ali è simile, mentre in A.urticae vi è la presenza di una zona centrale giallastra sul rovescio dell'ala anteriore.
