La Cattedrale di Santa Maria è il monumento principale di Burgos e con la sua monumentalità domina la città da quasi qualunque punto di vista e appare quasi sproporzionata alle medie dimensioni dell'abitato.L'esterno, con forme ispirate al gotico francese, è di grandissimo impatto, ma anche all'interno la chiesa ospita considerevoli tesori d'arte e di storia. Senza voler elencare tutto, spiccano almeno il ricchissimo retablo della Cappella di Sant'Anna e le tombe del Cid Campeador e di sua moglie Ximena, collocate proprio sotto la crociera e di forme insospettabilmente semplici. Ed un chiostro gotico fantastico.
